A hobby a day keeps the doldrums away.

Phyllis McGinley,an American author and poet

I was listening to Linkin Park’s song ‘Heavy’ featuring Kiira and I totally agreed with its lyrics.Indeed,we all have those days when our mood changes and suddenly,we are sad for no obvious reason. This condition is called mild depression.

It’s hard to diagnose it since it feels just like our regular emotions. Some of the common symptoms include:

  • Irritability
  • Experiencing negative thoughts
  • Feeling unusually tired
  • Feeling hopeless,self loathing
  • Feeling extremely sad, usually on the verge of tears
  • Feeling unmotivated
  • Wanting to be left alone

This mental condition can escalate to moderate or even severe depression if not well handled.

Enjoy fun thrills

Keeping the condition to yourself is NEVER an option!Consulting a pyschologist or a mental therapist is usually a good start to assess the degree of the condition and offer professional help.

You may also opt to share with a trusted friend, family or friend who will listen to you.

However, many people find that hobbies really help in dealing with depression.Doing something you actually enjoy is the key to true happiness. These thrills of life reduce stress and kills our bad ‘vibes'(moods).

So,get interested in something.Shake yourself awake today and develop a hobby.Live life with gusto!

Quality over quantity

Liz Mwangi

Sleep quality matters more than sleep quantity for your health.

It is said that everyone needs eight hours of sleep per night. However, sleeping six and a half hours per night is better than eight hours. This is because what matters is how much sleep you have within the hours of sleep and not the number of sleeping hours you have had.

Exposure to blue light affects your sleep.Blue light can be through use of electronic devices such as laptops and phone. Most people switch off the lights and continue using their phones in bed.Research shows that using your phone immediately before sleeping disrupts your sleep hence one gets less sleep which increases chances of developing heart diseases.Less sleep also causes one to feel tired all day which is not healthy to your body.

To get quality six to seven hour sleep,be active during the day.It helps you manage weight too.Ensure your environment is conducive for sleep.Avoid blue light through switching off lights or putting your electronic devices on night mode.Relieve yourself from stress, anxiety and worries.Know that your health matters more than the the things you are worried about.

Mind your mind

Mourrine Wambugu

On 10th October,2019, we celebrated the World Mental Health Awareness Day and it is clear that most of us know mental illness is a serious illness that can actually kill! I spoke to Dr.James Maweu, an accredited pyschologist, to educate us more on mental illness. This is how it unfolded:

1.Mourrine:Dr. Maweu, what is mental illness?

Dr.Maweu:Mental illness disrupts a person’s thoughts, emotions and sometimes relationships. A person might be facing troubles or having fears that disrupts him/her from functioning at 100%.That’s basically the definition in a lay man’s language.

2.Mourrine:What are some of the categories of mental illness?

Dr. Maweu: We have 4 categories of mental illnes. I have personally graded them into:

  1. Anxiety disorders e.g phobias you have that interfere you from doing something specifically, it becomes a disorder.
  2. We have eating disorders where, when you get mad you start stress eating (I call it stress eating) or binge eating. That’s a disorder.
  3. We also have mood disorders which I can classify them as bipolar 1&2;now you are happy and the next minute you are mad and when asked, you don’t even know why you are mad or happy.
  4. Then,we have personality disorders whereby you can occupy several personalities within you and you can’t quite define yourself.

3.Mourrine: What can you say are some of the causes of mental illness?

Dr. Maweu: Some of the causes of the mental illness are: Biological causes like genetics, psychological causes and social cultural causes. In social cultural causes, I believe ni ile utamaduni(they are those traditions). You believe that ‘umerogwa’ (you are bewitched),yeah.

4.Mourrine: Mh, interesting. What are some of the signs of this condition?

Dr. Maweu: Ah, there is a scientific model that categorizes the signs in mainly 4 Ds.

Number one we have dysfunction of the body whereby sometimes you can be hallucinating and seeing imaginary things.

You can also be endangering yourself. That is posing danger to yourself and others around you. For instance, you could cut yourself for no good reason ‘unajikata kata tu’

There is also denial as a sign. Some people deny that they are actually suffering. This could make them engage in drugs as a result.

And lastly, we have distress of the mind when you have those racing, endless thoughts. Could be suicidal or sad thoughts causing you stress.

5.Mourrine: OK, is mental illness treatable? If yes, what are some of the ways of treating it?

Dr. Maweu: Yes, it is treatable. First you must see a psychologist who in turn will put you in medication and then give you drugs. He /she will in turn fit you in social groups where you will share your story with others and get to see you were not the only one who was suffering this whole time. With this, you can help each other get out of mental illness.

6.Mourrine: Finally, what is the advice that you can give to these people suffering from mental illness?

Dr. Maweu: You know, we all have pressures of life. When you have this ‘off’ or weird feeling, you need to visit a psychologist or a therapist so that he can help you get out of this condition and give you professional help. We also need to stop viewing those having mental illness as weak people. They are not weak people rather, they are just like us. Let’s speak up to our close friends and family when we have these stray thoughts.Afterall, life is not that serious!

Beautiful Cage

Timothy Sikuku

Developing an addiction to drugs isn’t a character flaw or a sign of weakness, and it takes more than willpower to overcome the problem. Abusing illegal or certain prescription drugs can create changes in the brain, causing powerful cravings and a compulsion to use that makes sobriety seem like an impossible goal. But recovery is never out of reach, no matter how hopeless your situation seems or how many times you’ve tried and failed before. Addiction is a situation that no one would want to stay in and the fact that usually you don’t have the ability to walk away from it is sickening.
It is like a beautiful cage, there’s pleasure yet no freedom. At least you get to forget about the grinding pain of life, but it doesn’t seem to solve a thing. Once the grip of the control master let’s go of you, your back again to wallow in the mud of realities.
Is life all about running away rather dreading reality? Ain’t it really wise that we face it? Ain’t it really essential that we find a way out of a momentary beautiful cage that is chocking our destiny and dreams at a rate faster than the speed of light.
I’ll bring your attention to this today, accountability; being answerable to someone. Atleast this will help fight the deamons around you that usually proof to be stronger while you are alone. Having someone help you and have be accountable to them makes you stronger in resisting the urge to bow down to the preasure of addiction. It slowly ursaps the addiction of it’s authority in your life. Also having someone who walk with your in the real life situations whose growl leaves wanting to loose yourself for a moment. An accountability partner I would recommend it is someone you are attached to. Otherwise failing them wouldn’t be a problem to you. It’s is usually not easy but this I’d recommend, it might change your life and atleast save your generation. Long-term follow-up can help to prevent relapse and maintain sobriety. This may include attending regular in-person support groups or online meetings to help keep your recovery on track.

Run for your heart.

Brenda Kananu

How many times do you wake up just before dawn and the birds are chirping, the nature is inspiring you to go out and take a morning run ,breathe in the fresh air but instead you choose to pull up your blanket and sleep thirty more minutes before it’s officially time to prepare to go to school or work or do other things?Well these are the some of the reasons you should resist the warmth of your bed and start taking morning runs good for your heart’s cardio activity and good for general body wellness.

Running or jogging will help you get fit, both are aerobic exercises though running is faster and requires more effort, they help tone your leg muscles and the whole body in general,I mean who doesn’t want a well toned physique?

Running helps you loose weight since it burns fat within a short time due to the cardio activity involved in your body when you run or jog,it would do you a greater miracle if you mix jogging with other forms of exercise like swimming and workouts.

It is important to check your diet and avoid eating junk and consuming sugary stuff after all you don’t want to plus while minusing your early morning jogging efforts, that would be really sad.So start your morning runs ,they will do you a lot of good especially in maintaining your health and also slowing the aging process, after all the best way to start your day is energetically and all psyched up, and nothing does that better than a morning jog.
